Superbowl 44 - standing before kings

"Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men." Pr 22:29

On Sunday the world will watch the NFL Superbowl between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. One man playing will be Jeff Saturday, a center for the Colts. Jeff Saturday is one of the best players in the NFL and plays on one of the best teams in the NFL. Earlier this week in Miami, Jeff spoke in front of almost 3000 people including the international media community and said,

"Everything I have is because of Him," "This is a huge platform [but] without a purpose it really means nothing. Christianity is what defines me. My life hopefully glorifies Him and I give Him all the credit and honor." - Jeff Saturday, Center for the Indianapolis Colts

What are you good at? What would you do if you stood before kings? The great thing about this is not how great Jeff is, but how the glory of Christ is revealed and witnessed through him.

I remember when Jesus speaks of John the Baptist. John was great and stood before kings for the glory of our Lord.

"I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." Luke 7:28

Have you been overlooked, or have been 'side lined'? I'm used to hearing people giving the glory to God in victory, like many of the faithful Christians in collegiate and professional sports, but I was touched by Colt McCoy, a quarterback of the University of Texas after they lost the National Championship game. Colt was side lined early in the game and was unable to finish or contribute to his last game as in college. I see the heart of John in Colt when he said:

" ... Always give God the glory... I never questioned why things happen the way they do... God is in control of my life... and I know that... I'm standing on the Rock."

John was at the top of his game. Like John, Colt was able to step aside and give God the glory despite being in 'shadows' all game. Praise the Lord.

Michael Oher - The Blind Side - Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis

A book was written about Michael Oher called The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. This is a story of a dis-advantaged young black man that came from a troubled background who changed and whose life was changed by Sean and Leigh Ann Tuohy, a couple who loved the Lord.

The word of God shows that there is "there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." and that God's love can change us, even though it may seem impossible.

Clay Dyer - pro Bass Fisherman

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Clay Dyer was born with no legs, left arm but and a small right appendage and has been a pro Bass Fisher since 1995. "Clay’s motto for life is, "If I can, you can." He refuses to use special equipment, saying, "I want to do it with one hand the way they do it with two." He casts by tucking the rod under his jaw and whipping it around with a quick left-to-right twist. He reels fish in while holding the end of the rod under his chin. He ties knots with his tongue and unhooks fish with his teeth."

What got me the most is that his mother says he said he doesn't need anything and that all he needs is his heart, soul and mind. Maybe you feel some sort of lack that God is not big enough to work through you, but the opposite is true...this is an unbelievable story of how God can work through you despite your handicaps, whatever they may be.

Greg Ellis is a line backer for the Dallas Cowboys, and after suffering an achilles tendon injury that almost ended his career, he came back in 2007 and won the 'NFL comeback player of the year' award and also made it to the probowl in 2008. Greg Ellis attributes his suffering in the NFL as God's purpose in his life and give God the glory for his returned success. See his interview here:

Thanks for the blessed weekend guys…Tek, I know you are not in here, but you are in our hearts… :) Again, thanks to Shek for graciously hosting our retreat; for Ju for doing all the cooking… and sleeping like a ‘beauty’; for Kyo being a talented photographer and taking most of the pictures; and for all the men who put all the lions of the world to shame with their ability to eat meat! I pray for a year where we growing to become men that God wants us to be.

- The three things men in this world must battle against.
- Evaluate your life and see if your relationship is with that of the world or growing in a relationship with Christ.

3. "Those who have the deepest appreciation of grace do not continue in sin. Moreover, fear produces the obedience of slaves; love engenders the obedience of sons” (J. W. Sanderson, Jr.)."
- God's grace and acceptance is one sided. We as men had nothing to do with it, other than that it was our sin He died for.
- If we are in love with the things of this world we are not loving the things that please God.
- Would you desire and continue to hurt one that deeply loves you?

Thanks to the Lord who provided us with beautiful weather, dry wood for a massive fire, a plethora of protein in the form of meat, great fellowshipo and great place to lay our heads to sleep! Thanks for the memories my brothers!
